The truth about Christmas…

I am not a huge fan of Christmas and for various reasons but the whole idea of Santa Claus is just weird for me. However - now that I know where the dude comes from I feel a little bit better.

Big fan of youporn but hat tip to the man for showing me tube8.

Starting off light here folks.

Bangkok Recorder needs to get a clue!

Sorry folks. I just don’t get it. Why would a website run on their front page an article about the Santika tragedy and below that article still run the article announcing the Santika NY’s Eve Party?

Seems really lame to me. Never liked the Bangkok Recorder much and for sure I won’t be visiting the site again given this bout of insensitive stupidity.

I am not linking to the site here. Don’t want to help their lame traffic numbers out any.

Here is a photo of the front page:

Lot Noi dai mai - CAN U MAKE IT CHEAPER by maximus

Well this has been a long time coming, inspired by loads of regulars and some new ones. I have been reading this blog almost since the beginning and probably check in more than once when I am online to get any updates from the land of smiles. Unlike the informative and organized naturalgame I am going to break up this first hand account into 5 parts – that is way less than the number of visits I have had to Thailand but I don’t think I have enough interesting material for more than this. I must add that I read up voraciously before every trip trying to maximize my resource list and come out Smiling from LOS.

Jan 3 - 2009

Given the Santika stuff I did not want to pull any sensationalist headlines. I just don’t see the need and it does not feel right. It is a massive tragedy anyway you look at it. My deepest sympathies to anyone affected by this. I had one friend in the hospital and another friend of mine lost her friend. If you are a resident in Bangkok chances are you may know someone involved. This is how I see it - fireworks should not be used inside - under any circumstances. Yes - we could talk exits, safety standards, flammable materials, exit lighting and emergency lights. However in my opinion common sense needs to prevail - don’t do stuff that may start a fire. I think Mike, who was in the fire, has a pretty level headed view of it.

New Year’s 2009 Party Pics

We’ve posted some pics from the New Year’s Eve 2009 Party here. There is also one at the end from Christmas. We’ve also pushed up some Christmas 2008 Party Pics taken at the Duke Pub in Silom here.

Unfortunately, I dropped my camera during the night and wasn’t able to take pictures later in the evening or during the countdown. D’oh!

Our next parties will be end of January and possibly our first Superbowl Bash the morning of February 2nd. Details coming soon…

Best of luck to all in 2009.

A monger’s Xmas by Jack the Bat

Bachelorhood in Southeast Asia changes a man. I read a screed in the Bayon Pearnik here in Phnom Penh where an American expat back Stateside was trying to explain the scene to one of his Doritos/NFL/girlfriended/steel-belted-radial/regular-guy friends. His pal said, I see, so you’re banging prostitutes.

The BP is an amateurish rag and the writer’s thoughtfulness struck me: he said he considered prostitution to be work an individual found distasteful but would do for compensation (and of course, motivation for compensation can range from neurotic avarice to essential care of self/family, or any shade in between). So, he posited, a lawyer defending a corporate client rightly accused of industrial pollution would be engaging in prostitution, while a lovely young woman enjoying sexual congress resulting in compensation (dinner, flowers, candy, and yes even cold cash) would not. I’m paraphrasing here but I find the concept interesting.

New Year’s Eve & Smiley Faces…

Well folks. Thanks to all who came out to celebrate with the Ghost last night. It was a rocking party and I recall drunk people, happy people, drunk people, people passed out and more drunk people. Mission accomplished.

Ghost - props to sponsoring a great party!

As for tonight. For those in the SIlom area the Duke of Wellington is having a NYE Party. There will be some free snacks and shots. Live music and a lucky draw.

For those in the Sukhumvit area the Big Mango will have happy hour all night, some snacks and some shots put forth as we see fit to get people drunk.

My guess is many a people who visited the Mango last night are recovering. I know I am.

I will leave you with this - seems the police are putting on a smile campaign. Props - this one is almost as good as the new banners on KS Road that show the men in brown and proclaim - ask the men in brown because they know there way around town.

Respect.

What will the USD to Thai baht exchange rate be in February 09?
